October Newsletter
Joshua Dendy's Newsletter for October
October is my favorite month of the year. October includes fall weather, football, and best of all, Halloween. Besides great weather, amazing sports, and candy, October also had mindsets, completed goals, and new projects.
Projects
One of the projects that I created this month with a group of friends was a concept company called CarbonBase.
The idea is that CarbonBase is a company that tracks one's CO2 emissions and also sells a cryptocurrency, CarboCoin, that doubles as a carbon credit. Carbon credits, as defined by www.investopedia.com, are permits that allow those to hold it "to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide." By buying CarboCoin, users can fund projects that are helping the environment and offset their carbon emissions.
Note: This is just a concept and not an actual company, yet...
October’s Mindsets
October’s mindsets include curiosity, bias towards action, courage, and appreciation.
Curiosity
Curiosity is defined as “a strong desire to know or learn something.” To develop my curiosity I found an item I see every day and committed to creating a piece of content on it. This item that I found was flags. Flags are everywhere around us and after looking into flags I eventually found this video. After this video, I looked into the city of Las Vegas’s flag and decided to write an article about how ugly is and the fact that we need a new one.
Bias Towards Action
Bias towards action is the mindset of not overthinking things and focusing on getting results. This month I was using bias towards action to work on my article. Instead of thinking about how the article will look and what I do after I write it, I instead focused on writing one paragraph at a time.
Courage
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens you. I used courage by posting the projects and articles that I had made. I was scared to do this because I was unsure of what other people would think of the things I had created. Instead, I used courage to put myself out there.
Appreciation
Appreciation is recognizing the full worth of the things you have and the people around you. Learning about how spoiled I am as compared to other parts of the world has allowed me to deepen my appreciation for many things. In appreciation to my family and friends, I prioritized them during the last weekend of October and spent a lot more time with them.
October’s Goals
Finish “Bad Blood: The Final Chapter”
“Bad Blood: The Final Chapter” was about Elizabeth Holmes and her startup Theranos and long story short it was a big scam. I enjoyed this podcast and it truly put into perspective how we can’t trust all the promises and things we see online.
Write my first article
The first article that I wrote was about how the city of Las Vegas needs a new flag. I think it needs improvement but ‘done is better than perfect.’ Link to article.
Finish reading Hillbilly Elegy
I did not finish Hillibilly Elegy so this goal will be moved into next month.
November’s Goals
Finish Reading Hillbilly Elegy
I did not complete this goal last month and plan to do so in October.
Complete two stages of my focus
A focus in TKS is an independent endeavor where one deep dive into a certain topic. A focus consists of four parts and I plan on getting half of it done in November. The topic I have chosen is cancer.
Workout every morning
This goal is going to be a tough one. I recently heard in a podcast how important your health is and how important just 30 minutes of working out every day can be. My health is important and if I can extend how long I live through just 30 minutes a day, how could I say no?
October’s Quote
“Recognition is a reward in itself. Any form of appreciation, even a small word, is important.” -Vikrant Massey
